These styles were created when it was desired to control what was seen on the various types of screens.
L = Large screens
M = Medium screens
S = Small screens
The site is responsive so the need for this may not be as prominent as it was at one time. Currently, only the L styles are used in certain places in the site. If you do not wish to have content displayed differently based on screen size, you may use the "L" series as a way to divide up the width of the screen.
The combination of blocks on a line must equal 12, as you will see below by the examples.
